Long Synopsis (English)

AZIZA (27), conservative, and ZINA (30), leftist, are two political prisoners staying in adjacent, wall to wall, individual cells. They both have never gotten the chance to see each other. However, both of them recently received an Amnesty. Zina wakes up and starts humming a song about freedom. She turns to the wall that separates her cell from Aziza’s and knocks on it to wake her up. She then gets up and adds a scratch to the series of tallies on her wall to mark day 426. Aziza does the same. Zina and Aziza converse through the wall, bringing up the fact that they never had the chance to see each other. THE JAILER (45) comes to Aziza’s cell, opens the door and tells her that she is to leave right that moment. Having no other option, she picks up her belongings, puts on her Safseri and follows the jailer. When the two leave the cell, Aziza asks the jailer whether Zina is leaving any time soon. Despite her begging, the jailer refuses to answer. Zina, in her cell, tries to hear what they are saying, approaches her door and starts beating on it. Aziza tries to go towards Zina’s cell but the jailer pulls her and pushes her away. Zina, desperate, starts yelling her home address “Avenue Paris, Street Mohamed V”. Zina gets hysterical and repeats the address to herself over and over again. She sits against the wall, hugging herself and crying. The jailer finally comes in and tells her that it’s time to leave. Surprised, Zina rushes to pick up her belongings, puts on her Safseri and leaves. In the office, THE AGENT OF PRISONS (53) signs the declaration of release for Aziza while she stands in front of him. He hands it to her and calls for the next prisoner. Aziza picks it up and heads out. Zina, comes in and walk past Aziza, unaware of who she is. The agent of prisons hands files to his SECRETARY (35) and informs her that they are Aziza’s. Zina hears her friend’s name and gets agitated. She realizes she had just missed the one chance she had to see Aziza. The agent interrupts her chain of thoughts by knocking on the table to get her attention. Meanwhile, Aziza leaves the prison building. Zina gets all her paperwork done and rushes outside. The guard at the door calls for discipline. She eventually leaves the building. Zina stands at the gate and looks for Aziza.
